Good books on rowing are few and far between. If you like autobiographies Pinsent's and Foster's are both good. Murray and Bond's new book is on par with the latter two and very much deserves five stars.

It's an engaging read that moves along at a decent pace and does an insightful job of showing the reader the life including challenges of a an elite endurance athlete. Both men come across as interesting characters, albeit with very different personalities and it is fascinating to see how together they overcame some fairly substantial disappointments to form what is arguably the greatest rowing crew of all time.

The relationships with their various coaches are also covered and it is interesting to see how they achieved the results they did under the different styles. Two very minor criticisms. The finals chapters were written shortly after the Rio final and as such don't provide much in the way of retrospective observation, and as a rowing fan it would have been really interesting to have seen a table of their 2k erg times through the years.

Small points though in what is a very good book. Was this review helpful to you?
